The Truth About Speaking In Tongues- Don Walton
9.7.08

This article contains one of the more balanced views of tongues and spiritual gifts. Pastor Don Walton is the founder of Time For Truth Ministries and a spiritual father to me. Please read on...

I can cause charismatics considerable distress by simply reading a question from 1 Corinthians 12:30, “Do all speak with tongues?” The obvious answer to this question is “no.” Likewise, I can prove to be quite bothersome to Baptists by simply reading a portion of 1 Corinthians 14:39, “…forbid not to speak with tongues.” Interestingly, all I’ve done in either case to incite such angst is read the Bible. Why, one wonders, are simple verses of Scripture so stressful to today’s saints.

I’m afraid many of us approach the Bible with entrenched, preconceived ideas. Therefore, when a verse of Scripture contradicts what we’ve already made up our minds to believe, our stomachs knot up. Rather than attempting to relieve our spiritual tummy aches by changing our beliefs to fit into what the Bible says, we try to change what the Bible says to fit into our beliefs. In our efforts to turn the meaning of Scripture more to our liking we often employ the well-worn maxims: “A better translation would be…,” “What the Greek actually means is…,” or the ever popular, “According to Dr. So and So, what this verse is really saying…”

Our International Mission Board’s recent decision to bar from board appointment missionaries who profess, as the board’s own president does, to having a “private prayer language,” serves as a good example of the unmanageable entanglements and untenable positions we paint ourselves into when we lay aside God’s Word for our traditions (Mark 7:1-13). Although I’m a proud Southern Baptist who believes ours is the greatest missionary enterprise in the world, I can’t help but be embarrassed by an IMB that bars missionaries with a “private prayer language” from the mission field while being presided over by a man with a “private prayer language.” Such duplicity is both inexcusable and inexplicable, not to mention detrimental to our mission work. It forbids God-called men and women from serving as Southern Baptist missionaries, as well as fosters to a lost and dying world an image of our convention as incomprehensibly conflicted.

Like IMB president, Dr. Jerry Rankin, I am no cessationist. I do not adhere to B. B. Warfield’s contention that the sign or miracle gifts passed away with the Apostolic Age. In all honesty, I’ve always suspected that the reason for the popularity of Warfield’s contention within our convention is due to the fact that it provides us with an excuse for the absence of the miraculous from our midst. If Warfield was right, then we are justified in replacing God’s power with church programs and spiritual gifts with human ingenuity; after all, there’s nothing else we can do in this present dispensation.

Although many Southern Baptists believe that anyone refusing to walk in lockstep with Benjamin Warfield is walking in lockstep with Benny Hinn; the truth is: one can refuse to warm his feet at the cessationist fire and still remain outside the charismatic camp. I wish all Southern Baptists would learn not to let someone’s abuse of the truth cause them to refuse the truth. Normally, when a truth is abused everyone reacts by moving across town to the opposite extreme. For instance, when charismatics insist that speaking in tongues is the evidence of the baptism of the Holy Ghost, cessationists react by moving across town and insisting that there’s no such thing as tongues. In the end, both extremes are wrong and the devil has pulled the rug out from under everybody.

Truth is always found in the middle of the two extremes. From the middle, let’s pick apart the charismatic and cessationist’s extremes. First, the charismatic proof texts for their belief that glossolalia is proof of the baptism of the Holy Ghost are all found in the Book of Acts. The Book of Acts tells us about the birth and infancy of the church. It is a book of transitions: from shadows (types of Christ) to substance (Christ Himself), from an Old Covenant to a New Covenant, from the law to grace, from a Levitical priesthood to a spiritual (royal) priesthood, and from the old Israel (the physical seed of Abraham, the church in the wilderness, and the wife of Jehovah) to the new Israel (the spiritual seed of Abraham, the church of God, and the bride of Christ).

Each incident cited by charismatics in Acts as proof that believers receive the Holy Spirit subsequent to salvation is actually a unique and unparalleled historical event. For instance, the second chapter of Acts tells us about the Day of Pentecost. On this once and for all historical occasion, the foretold promise of the Father is given to the church. The church is born! The people of God transition from an Old Testament people to a New Testament people. Obviously, the 120 believers gathered in the upper room on this most eventful day could not have possibly received the promise of the Father prior to Pentecost, since the promise had not yet been given. Furthermore, the tongues spoken on this occasion are not unknown tongues, as the charismatics allege, but other known languages, as is proven by the fact that everyone heard “the wonderful works of God” in their own language (Acts 2:1-11). Far from being the norm for every believer, this passage of Scripture tells us about a unique event in the history of the world that is never to be repeated.

In Acts 8, the Gospel goes for the first time to someone other than Jews—the half-breed Samaritans. These “dogs,” as they were called by the Jews, were so hated and despised that no Jewish believer could have possibly imagined God’s inclusion of them in the church of Christ. Thus, it was imperative that apostles from Jerusalem be present when the Spirit first fell in Samaria; otherwise, the Jews would have never accepted the Samaritans as their brothers and sisters in Christ. Interestingly, and much to the charismatics’ dismay, glossolalia is not mentioned at all in this entire passage.

In Acts 10, Peter takes the Gospel to Cornelius’ house. For the first time the Gospel goes to Gentiles. These Gentiles receive the Gospel and the Holy Spirit simultaneously; there is no lapse of time between the two. As the gift of the Holy Spirit is poured out on these believing Gentiles, Peter and his Jewish companions hear them “speak with tongues, and magnify God” (Acts 10:44-48). This outward sign of the outpouring of the Holy Spirit and the Gentiles’ salvation was proof positive that God is “no respecter of persons” (Acts 10:34). While Peter and his fellow-Jews may have attributed the salvation of Samaritans to the fact that they had some Jewish blood, the only explanation for the salvation of Gentiles was: “Whosoever will, may come!”

In Acts 19, Paul runs across some disciples of John the Baptist in Ephesus. Upon learning of their total unfamiliarity with the Holy Spirit and their baptism by John the Baptist, the apostle ascertains that these Old Testament saints needed to transition into the New Testament. Paul leads them to do so by leading them to Christ and into the waters of believer’s baptism. Afterward, the Holy Spirit came upon them and they “spoke with tongues, and prophesied” (Acts 19:1-7). I find it interesting that charismatics pull tongues from this passage as the lone proof of the baptism of the Holy Ghost. Why is prophecy not equally acclaimed by them as proof positive of Spirit baptism? Why elevate the least of the gifts at the expense of the most important? It is, after all, “by the foolishness of preaching [prophecy],” that God is pleased “to save them that believe” (1 Corinthians 1:21).

The Bible plainly teaches that all believers have been baptized by the Spirit into the body of Christ (1 Corinthians 12:13). John the Baptist preached that all men would be baptized by Christ, either with the fire of the Holy Spirit or the “unquenchable” fire of judgment (Matthew 3:10-12; Luke 3:16-17) And the Apostle Paul proclaims in no uncertain terms, “Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his” (Romans 8:9). When coupled with the charismatics’ attempt to turn unique, historical events in the Book of Acts into everyday, common occurrences in the lives of modern-day believers, these clear teachings of Scripture leave charismatics without a Scriptural leg to stand on in their argument for the baptism of the Holy Ghost as evidenced by speaking in tongues.

Now, let’s move across town and explore the problems with the cessationist’s reaction to charismatic error. First, many cessationists insist that there never was a gift of unknown tongues. According to them, the only gift of tongues spoken of in the New Testament was a miraculous ability to speak in other known languages previously unknown to the speaker. They cite the Day of Pentecost as a case in point. Although the tongues spoken on Pentecost were undoubtedly other known languages, there was also a spiritual gift of unknown tongues, as is plainly taught by the Apostle Paul in the fourteenth chapter of 1 Corinthians.

In 1 Corinthians 14:2, the Apostle Paul writes, “For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries.” Paul cannot possibly be speaking in this verse of the kind of tongues spoken on the Day of Pentecost, since they were spoken in prophesy (“unto men”) and not in prayer (“unto God”). Furthermore, the tongues spoken on Pentecost were not “mysteries” spoken “in the spirit” that no man could understand, but clearly understood by men who heard “the wonderful works of God” in their own languages.

What’s more, there was no need of interpreters on the Day of Pentecost. Each man heard the Gospel in his own language. Yet, the Apostle Paul speaks of the spiritual gift of “interpretation of tongues” (1 Corinthians 12:10, 30; 14:5, 13, 26-28). Obviously, this gift is not the natural ability of someone to understand their own language or other learned languages. For example, one would not say that a Brazilian had the spiritual gift of interpretation because of their ability to understand Portuguese, their native tongue. This leads us, much to the cessationist’s chagrin, to an inevitable conclusion. The only explanation for the spiritual gift of interpretation of tongues is the existence of a spiritual gift of unknown tongues, since it is the gift of unknown tongues alone that necessitates interpretation.

The good cessationist will argue at this point that whether or not there was a gift of unknown tongues is irrelevant, since tongues, along with all the other sign or miracle gifts, ceased long ago with the Apostolic Age. Although the cessationist’s argument that the miracle gifts were temporarily given to confirm the message of the Gospel until the canon of Scripture was completed is easily found in today’s Southern Baptist’s circles, it is impossible to find in God’s Word. Oh, I know about the transitive and intransitive Greek verbs in 1 Corinthians 13:8, as well as Paul’s teaching that tongues was a sign to unbelieving Jews of God’s impending judgment (see: 1 Corinthians 14:21-22 and Isaiah 28:11-12). Still, neither of these justifies the cessationists’ swipe at all things miraculous in today’s church or their assertion that the gift of tongues ceased with the destruction of Jerusalem by Titus the Roman in A.D. 70. Whereas it is easy to shoot holes in the charismatics’ proof texts, it is extremely difficult for cessationists to come up with any proof texts. They simply don’t have a single Scriptural peg to hang their hats on.

To be true to the Scripture, we must acknowledge that all the spiritual gifts still exist today. Moreover, we must come to realize the importance of discovering, developing and deploying our spiritual gifts in the body of Christ. The church will never be all that it can be for Christ in this world until each believer is ministering in and through the church according to his or her spiritual gifting. While spiritual gifts are given and operated in accordance with the Spirit’s will (1 Corinthians 12:7-11), not ours, each Spirit-given gift is vital to the church’s ministry and none should be forbidden as long as they are being operated under the Spirit’s anointing. This includes the gifts of unknown tongues and the interpretation of tongues.

Perhaps, the best way to explain the gift of unknown tongues is to call it the bypass ministry of the Holy Spirit. Have you ever been burdened to pray for someone or about something but didn’t know how or what to pray? If you have, you know how frustrating this can be. Those who possess the gift of unknown tongues often find the Holy Spirit bypassing them when they come to such a standstill in their intercessory prayers. When they don’t “know” how to “pray as [they] ought,” the Spirit kicks in and prays a perfect prayer of intercession “with groanings which cannot be uttered” (Romans 8:26). Although they do not know what the Spirit has prayed (1 Corinthians 14:14), they know He has prayed a perfect prayer of intercession through them.

While this gift is edifying to all who possess it (1 Corinthians 14:4), it is not edifying to others unless used in conjunction with the gift of interpretation (1 Corinthians 14:5, 13). Thus, the Bible teaches that the gift of unknown tongues is to be confined to one’s own private prayer life (1 Corinthians 14:28). It is never to be used in a public worship service unless someone with the spiritual gift of interpretation is present; and even then, only one at a time may speak and never more than three in a service (1 Corinthians 14:27-28). Of course, the church is to always discern and judge whether or not what it hears is of God (1 Corinthians 14:29-31). If it is not done in accordance with the Spirit’s will and under the Spirit’s anointing, then the prophets are to quickly bring all untoward spirits into subjection (1 Corinthians 14:32), for our God “is not the author of confusion, but of peace, as in all churches of the saints” (1 Corinthians 14:33). Failing Our Foundation (2 Chron. 7.11-22 ESV)
26.3.08
I was asked this afternoon to lead the Bible Study tonight. Here are the "bare bones" of my notes.

INTRO
Our Scripture tonight deals with our foundations as a nation (the United States), a church (in the United States and Antioch) and individually. Our response to God's expectations for us will result in receiving His promise or falling into the wrath He warns us about.

FOUNDATION OF FAITH

11 Thus Solomon finished the house of the Lord and the king’s house. All that Solomon had planned to do in the house of the Lord and in his own house he successfully accomplished. 12 Then the Lord appeared to Solomon in the night and said to him: “I have heard your prayer and have chosen this place for myself as a house of sacrifice.
When the nation is dedicated to the Lord, when the church is dedicated to the Lord, when the Christian is dedicated to the Lord- the communion is sweet and intimate. The United States was built on such a foundation. We have gone astray. The church in the USA was built on such a foundation- are we going astray? Are we salt and light? (ponder)

FAVORED RESPONSE
13 When I shut up the heavens so that there is no rain, or command the locust to devour the land, or send pestilence among my people, 14 if my people who are called by my name humble themselves, and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land.
Verse 14: Key Verse- the action of a faithful people is what God expects of us. If bad things happen, we need to react in a godly way. IF- God's people 1- HUMBLE THEMSELVES (not look to ourselves: 9-11 we threw money at the problem, no national revival) 2- PRAY 3- SEEK GOD'S FACE (not His hands- seek Him, not what He can do for you) 4- TURN FROM THEIR WICKED WAYS (Repent! do not sacrifice to God and remain in sin- God hates that; see Isaiah 58 as an example) THEN- He will 1- HEAR 2- FORGIVE 3- HEAL. God is the answer to our problems. He alone is faithful. JESUS É FIEL!!!!

FATHER'S PROMISE
15 Now my eyes will be open and my ears attentive to the prayer that is made in this place. 16 For now I have chosen and consecrated this house that my name may be there forever. My eyes and my heart will be there for all time. 17 And as for you, if you will walk before me as David your father walked, doing according to all that I have commanded you and keeping my statutes and my rules, 18 then I will establish your royal throne, as I covenanted with David your father, saying, ‘You shall not lack a man to rule Israel.’
For Israel, obedience and faithfulness to God was rewarded by the attention of God and the stability of a king in a line of kings appointed and blessed by God. For the United States, national faithfulness brought blessing from God and political stability for over 200 years. Is it unraveling? For the Church, faithfulness means intimacy with God and that He is our King forever.

FATHER'S WARNING
19 “But if youturn aside and forsake my statutes and my commandments that I have set before you, and go and serve other gods and worship them, 20 then I will pluck youup from my land that I have given you, and this house that I have consecrated for my name, I will cast out of my sight, and I will make it a proverb and a byword among all peoples. 21 And at this house, which was exalted, everyone passing by will be astonished and say, ‘Why has the Lord done thus to this land and to this house?’ 22 Then they will say, ‘Because they abandoned the Lord, the God of their fathers who brought them out of the land of Egypt and laid hold on other gods and worshiped them and served them. Therefore he has brought all this disaster on them.’ ”
But when Israel, the United States or the "church" is not faithful, ruin and separation from God. Has our nation been faithful to God? Have we kept God's command to His people? Have we personally sought God faithfully, shared our faith with the unbelievers around us or turned from our sin?

BRIEF CONCLUSION
Our nation and the church have both been built on a foundation of faith. Our nation is abandoning that foundation. We must be faithful, as those who are called by His name- CHRISTians- and humble ourselves, pray, seek after God and turn from our wicked ways. It is our call and our duty.

12.31.2006: Preached at Grace Baptist
31.12.06

My new choice for a Bible is my new ESV Bible. It was on sale at Books-A-Million for 30% off and an extra 10% for BAM Club Members. Original price was $29.99. It was a great deal and it has a great cover. I found it matched the NASB very well in my selected texts. The sermon outline is below.

GOD KNOWS WHOM HE CALLS” (JEREMIAH 1.4-10)

Teenage Christians are the church of tomorrow, right? NO! Neither are any of us the future of the Church- we are to do something now, not the future. The work of the Church is not for pastors or other ministers. It is for all of us.

John 1.12: “But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God
God has no grandchildren. Look at Jeremiah as an example:

THE CALL
4Now the word of the LORD came to me, saying, 5"Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you; I appointed you a prophet to the nations."

BEFORE BIRTH: Known, Consecrated, Appointed
• v.5a- God knows us before birth (a good argument against abortion)
• v.5b- He makes plans for His chosen from the foundation of the earth (“even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the worldEphesians 1.4)
*I was ordained at 35 by an SBC church, but if my ordination is true, God did it from “the foundation of the earth”

THE CORRECTION
6Then I said, "Ah, Lord GOD! Behold, I do not know how to speak, for I am only a youth." 7But the LORD said to me, "Do not say, 'I am only a youth'; for to all to whom I send you, you shall go, and whatever I command you, you shall speak. 8Do not be afraid of them, for I am with you to deliver you, declares the LORD."

EXCUSES OFFERED
• v.6- objection based on his age. We may say “too old,” “can’t speak well” (see Exodus 4.10: “But Moses said to the LORD, ‘Oh, my Lord, I am not eloquent, either in the past or since you have spoken to your servant, but I am slow of speech and of tongue.’”) Age here; Ours: fear, offense, busy, prohibited where we are

EXCUSES ANSWERED
• v.7, 8- God knows whom He has called and has sent us anyway. NO ROOM FOR EXCUSES, PUT THEM AWAY.

WE CANNOT SURPRISE GOD WITH OUR WEAKNESSES!
• “But God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise; God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strongI Corinthians 1.27

THE COMMISSION
9Then the LORD put out his hand and touched my mouth. And the LORD said to me, "Behold, I have put my words in your mouth. 10See, I have set you this day over nations and over kingdoms, to pluck up and to break down, to destroy and to overthrow, to build and to plant."

THE LORD EQUIPS AND POSITIONS
• v.9- God places His Word inside of us
• v.10- He sets us up where He wants us: Like Esther: “And who knows whether you have not come to the kingdom for such a time as this?” (Esther 4.14b)

THE LORD PROVIDES RESOURCES
• It’s His Word we are to “go into all the world and proclaim…” (Mark 16.15) and “it shall not return… empty” (Isaiah 55.11). His Word is “living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword” (Hebrews 4.12)
• We have no excuse for not doing His will. This church should be growing as a result of the daily witnessing and preaching of the Gospel. Do the work; God will bring His harvest.

Conclusion: God has called us. He knows why we are not worthy or able to follow His call. He is not surprised and calls us despite our age or ability. Commit yourself to Him today and learn about His Word so you can share it with others.

Bible Versions (Part Three)
17.11.06

Heretical Versions of the Bible

This is a follow-up to the previous post in which I highlighted a quote from John Piper (a preacher I respect greatly) that spoke to the value of many versions of the Bible.

He is correct in lifting up credible translations (NIV, NASB, KJV, NKJV, ESV, etc.) as helpful and valuable. Despite the KJV-Only claim that "you can't get save through the other versions," I find that even the NLT is valuable in proclaiming God's message. It is not close to being as good as the NASB, ESV, NKJV or KJV (or even the NIV!), but it does proclaim the Gospel adequately. I even use it in my Bible reading time and sometimes to read to my 2 year old and 5 years old daughters.

However, there are versions that hold little-to-no value. For example there is the New World Translation from the Jehovah's Witnesses. It proves its heretical intentions clearest in John 1.1: "In [the] beginning the Word was, and the Word was with God, and the Word was a god." The problem with their usage of "a god" is that it, #1 promotes a polytheism they deny; #2 it is inaccurate- consistency would call for them to retranslate "God" as "a god" in many other places; #3 though this fits with their warped theology, it was inspired by cultic writings, not credible Christian doctrines from the early Church.

Second there is the "Inspired Version" by Joseph Smith (Mormon founder- along with some demons no doubt). To stick with John 1.1, here is the Joseph Smith version: "
In the beginning was the gospel preached through the Son. And the gospel was the word, and the word was with the Son, and the Son was with God, and the Son was of God." Of course there is no reason to place "Son" in this verse. There is no legitimate support from ancient texts to render John 1.1 as using the word "Son." Add to that the verse concludes, "the Son was of God," and it unites with Mormon theology and doctrine, but it departs from Biblical truth and honest translation.

Third there is The Message. I refuse to call it a Bible, because it is a shallow commentary at best, and blatantly heretical at worst. It waters down the Word so thoroughly that it becomes useless. I have a prior post on this "version" that demonstrates the problem with The Message. Here is the core of that post:
I have no respect for "The Message" bible. It continually waters-down the message of God. A prime example is the rendering of Hebrews 10.31. I will compare:
From the King James: "It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God."
From the New King James: "It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God."
From the New Century Version: "It is a terrible thing to fall into the hands of the living God."
From the World English Bible: "It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God."
From the New American Standard Bible: "It is a terrifying thing to fall into the hands of the living God."
From the New International Version: "It is a dreadful thing to fall into the hands of the living God."
From the New Living Translation: "It is a terrible thing to fall into the hands of the living God."
Even the heretical New World Translation says: "It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of [the] living God." (Which many Jehovah's Witnesses will do if they do not repent from their cult)

Now for "The Message" rendering of Hebrews 10.31: "Nobody's getting by with anything, believe me."

What is wrong with that version? It totally takes out any hint of God's Judgment. The people who came up with the trash they pass off as a Bible (The Message) need to repent for their mishandling of God's Word!
Finally, is The Catholic Bible. The one commissioned most recently (mid 1900's) was The New American Bible. It was the follow-up to the Douay-Rheims Bible, the first major version for English-speaking Romanists (late-1500's to early 1600's). The inclusion of the non-canonical Apocryphal books discounts these "Bibles" for anyone who cherishes truth and honesty in Scripture. It seems to be more of a response to the losses of Rome to Biblical Christianity dating from the pre-Reformation and Reformation roots until the present. I still believe that the inclusion of the Apocrypha by Rome was a reaction to the adoption of the canonical books by the Reformers (with history on the side of the Reformers for sure).

The issue of the Bible and legitimate versions is essential to the growth of the true Church and the spread of the true Gospel. It gives us a foundation to expose and resist heresy (i.e.- Watchtower/Jehovah's Witnesses, LDS/Mormons, Jewish Mysticism/"Dan Brown theology", etc.) and grow in Christ.

Bible Versions (Part Two)
16.11.06
An Endorsement of the English Standard Bible

I was reading John Piper's site and found an interesting quote on Bible versions:
I would rather have people read any translation of the Bible—no matter how weak—than to read no translation of the Bible. If there could be only one translation in English, I would rather it be my least favorite than that there be none. God uses every version to bless people and save people.
John Piper recommends the ESV.

Through this article John Piper recommended the new English Standard Version for NIV-type readability with NASB-type word for word translation that is light on interpretation. I have been looking at the ESV and agree. It is a bit easier to read than the NASB and it more faithful to the manuscripts than is the NIV.

Being non-KJV-Only, I still find the KJV useful. I do not discount it at all. However, I choose the NASB or the ESV. And I agree with John Piper on his above quote.

Bible Versions (Part One)
13.11.06
When Did the King James Version become "Authorized?"

Because the 1611 version is very much different. For example Matthew 26.64 in both:

Iesus saith vnto him, Thou hast saide: Neuerthelesse I say vnto you, Hereafter shall yee see the Sonne of man sitting on the right hand of power, and coming in the clouds of heauen. (KJV 1611)
Jesus saith unto him, Thou hast said: nevertheless I say unto you, Hereafter shall ye see the Son of man sitting on the right hand of power, and coming in the clouds of heaven. (KJV "Authorized")
While I know it is only a difference in spelling here, if the KJV is the "only version," how dare someone change it. Otherwise, it is just a good, reliable translation. If someone has the date that the KJV became "Authorized," please tell me in the comments section. Because it is not the original KJV we use now.

KJV-Onlyism is heretical and requires the use of a specific version for salvation (as I've been told before, "You can't be saved using the NIV." )

I use the KJV, but also the NASB, NIV (though I think it is weak in many areas), NKJV, ESV, WEBible, NET Bible, NLT (though it is also weak in areas), Young's Literal Translation and the ASV at times. What do non-english speakers use if the KJV is the only version God sanctions?

Imitators of God/Imitadores de Deus
11.8.06
Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children; and walk in love, just as Christ also loved you and gave Himself up for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God as a fragrant aroma.
But immorality or any impurity or greed must not even be named among you, as is proper among saints; and there must be no filthiness and silly talk, or coarse jesting, which are not fitting, but rather giving of thanks.
For this you know with certainty, that no immoral or impure person or covetous man, who is an idolater, has an inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God. (Ephesians 5.1-5 NASB)

English:
We are called to be imitators of God. To be a pleasing sacrifice and walk in love. However, I believe "love" is not what many understand it to be.

This Scripture also says that many will not be eligible for heaven because of what they do and who they are. (Idolators, immoral, impure, etc.)

True love is not blind. God does not see what He has forgiven, but He does see the sin of those who reject Him.

Almas. Almas que precisam Jesus e salvação. Si Deus quer, eu vou em 2007. Agora eu orarei. Eles precisam um otro caminho.

English:
Many things seem right but are bad. When we don't speak about Jesus for others they choose sin and death. My heart is preoccuied with the souls of the Brazilian people. My heart loves Brasil and the Brazilian people very much. I want many Brazilians to encounter, or meet, Jesus and serve Him with all their lives. Also, I want the whole world to receive Jesus, but I know many desire sin and death. It's an ungly situation.

In 2007 my friend from recife, Brasil wants me to go to Angola to preach and teach. Souls. Souls that need Jesus and salvation. If God wants me to, I will go in 2007. Now I will pray. They need another way.

JESUS é fiel! JESUS is faithful!

Hoje é Hoje
10.7.06

(Mateus 6.34 AA)

(For english: see the post "Aproveite o Dia" from June 23, 2006. It basically says the same thing, or use the translation function on the right side [Babelfish], Thanks)

Aproveite o Dia
23.6.06
Carolyn Arends: Seize The Day

I know a girl who was schooled in Manhattan
She reads dusty books and learns phrases in Latin
She is an author, or maybe a poet
A genius but it's just this world doesn't know it
She works on her novel most every day
If you laugh she will say

chorus:
Seize the day, seize whatever you can
'Cause life slips away just like hourglass sand
Seize the day, pray for grace from God's hand
Then nothing will stand in your way
Seize the day

Well I know a doctor, a fine young physician
Left his six-figure job for a mission position
He's healing the sick in an African clinic
He works in the dirt and writes home to the cynics
He says "We work through the night so most every day
As we watch the sun rise we can say

chorus

Well I know a man who's been doing some thinking
He's as bitter and cold as the whiskey he's drinking
He's talking 'bout fear, about chances not taken
If you listen to him you can hear his heart breaking
He says "One day you're a boy and the next day you're dead
I wish way back when someone had said

chorus

Well one thing I've noticed, wherever I wander
Everyone's got a dream he can follow or squander
You can do what you will with the days you are given
I'm trying to spend mine on the business of living
So I'm singing my songs off of any old stage
You can laugh if you want, I'll still say

chorus

As I was in Brasil, this song was on my mind. The concept was one we adopted and it helped the time to pass slowly. Normally it is over before it started, but this time the week seemed to last a month and it was wonderful. We sought to live each moment in and of itself. Even the day before I left we focused on that day and not "tomorrow I am leaving."

"But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. So do not worry about tomorrow; for tomorrow will care for itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own." (Matthew 6.33-34 NASB)

Each day has enough trouble of its own... well it also has enough value and joy of its own. We further expounded on "Aproveite o dia" with "hoje e hoje" or "today is today." The value of each day increased by cherishing it.

Now I am home, and this is more difficult to adhere to. I go to work and deal with things I really, really dislike (I am considering posting about some of these things) and I want to forget today and live for tomorrow. But today I need to focus on and get the most out of. Just like in Brazil.

I thank all of you who prayed for me and send emails or commented. It was all appreciated. Aproveite o dia- seize the day!

The Prayer of Jabez
24.1.06
A popular book, The Prayer of Jabez does nothing but promote greed, selfishness and materialism by using a single Scripture. I would like to look at Jabez in contrast to another Scripture in the book of James.
Jabez was more honorable than his brothers, and his mother named him Jabez saying, "Because I bore him with pain."
Now Jabez called on the God of Israel, saying, "Oh that You would bless me indeed and enlarge my border, and that Your hand might be with me, and that You would keep me from harm that it may not pain me!" And God granted him what he requested. (1 Chronicles 4.9-10 NASB)

You lust and do not have; so you commit murder. You are envious and cannot obtain; so you fight and quarrel. You do not have because you do not ask.
You ask and do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, so that you may spend it on your pleasures.
You adulteresses, do you not know that friendship with the world is hostility toward God? Therefore whoever wishes to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God. (James 4.2-4 NASB)

Jabez was given what he asked for by a Sovereign God Who can do whatever He wills. Why did God give Jabez his desire? Well, first, He wanted to. Secondly, Jabez was of nobel character, and Jabez wanted God's presence in his life. So, does this give us a principle everyone can follow? No. God is not locked into a "fairness doctrine." He does not have to give me what He gives you.

Just as it is written, "JACOB I LOVED, BUT ESAU I HATED."
What shall we say then? There is no injustice with God, is there? May it never be!
For He says to Moses, "I WILL HAVE MERCY ON WHOM I HAVE MERCY, AND I WILL HAVE COMPASSION ON WHOM I HAVE COMPASSION."
So then it does not depend on the man who wills or the man who runs, but on God who has mercy.
For the Scripture says to Pharaoh, "FOR THIS VERY PURPOSE I RAISED YOU UP, TO DEMONSTRATE MY POWER IN YOU, AND THAT MY NAME MIGHT BE PROCLAIMED THROUGHOUT THE WHOLE EARTH."
So then He has mercy on whom He desires, and He hardens whom He desires.
You will say to me then, "Why does He still find fault? For who resists His will?"
On the contrary, who are you, O man, who answers back to God? The thing molded will not say to the molder, "Why did you make me like this," will it?
Or does not the potter have a right over the clay, to make from the same lump one vessel for honorable use and another for common use? (Romans 9.13-21 NASB)

This Scripture shows us that God can and will do as He pleases. It is His right as God! This is a powerful Scripture for the predestination argument, but it also shows that God can bless one person and not another. He does not have to expand my boarders because He did so for Jabez. I also guarantee you that Jabez was not asking selfishly or out of pride.

Going back to James, we often hear "you have not because you ask not" before some greasy agent of the devil on TBN tells us to ask God for "the desires of our hearts." Unfortunately, they forget the next verse: "You ask and do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, so that you may spend it on your pleasures." (James 4.3 NASB) So does the author of Jabez.

Being a Christian is not about "me." It is about JESUS. If it is not, you might as well begin ordaining homosexuals and atheists. Nothing matters anymore. The author and adherents of the pseudo-Gospel of Jabez should repent before Hebrews 10.31 (NASB) comes alive to them: "It is a terrifying thing to fall into the hands of the living God."

"Lucifer": Choir Director?
20.12.05
Thou hast been in Eden the garden of God; every precious stone was thy covering, the sardius, topaz, and the diamond, the beryl, the onyx, and the jasper, the sapphire, the emerald, and the carbuncle, and gold: the workmanship of thy tabrets and of thy pipes was prepared in thee in the day that thou wast created. (Ezekiel 28.13 KJV)

I have seen this verse used to "prove" that satan was heaven's choir director. I have seen very little Scripture in support of this, it is taught as is evolution- as theory masquerading as fact. No where in the Bible does it say that satan was the choir director- or that heaven even has a choir director!

All this is for those who disapprove of a particular musical style to have some was to rationalize demonizing the music. This may seem like a defense of Christian Rock, but it is not. It is not meant as a defense to any music. It is meant as a desire for truth. Some music may be inappropriate, but do not twist Scripture to make the point.

I still cannot tell at what point music itself becomes "evil." Is it when we play 3/4 time? 4/4? When there's no organ? If there is a guitar? Drums? A minor chord? Effects like chorus, distortion, wah or delay? Use of a non-acoustic instrument? Cymbals?

For me, the words and lifestyle of the band mean a lot. I do not listen to much "contemporary Christian" music because it is very shallow and the lifestyles are less than worldly (e.g.- Amy Grant shacks up with Vince Gill and is still considered a Christian artist- what a joke!!). Some Gospel musicians are filled with pride (I have seen it close up) and some Christian "rockers" are as filled with the world as any "secular" artist ever was. A band that is tabbed as "Christian" (such as Switchfoot) and does not mention Jesus once- not even in the "thank yous" (such as Switchfoot) are worthless. If they do personally claim to be Christians they are lame.

To sum this up, satan was no choir director and if we have a conviction against any style of music (like rock, rap, hymns, choruses, etc) we should not isogete (read into the text) Scripture to prove our point. We should stick to God's Word and conform to it as the Holy Spirit transforms us, not try to transform it to fit our point. Sola Scriptura.

Just Give me Jesus
15.10.05
The steps of a good man are ordered by the LORD,
And He delights in his way.
Though he fall, he shall not be utterly cast down;
For the LORD upholds him with His hand.

I have been young, and now am old;
Yet I have not seen the righteous forsaken,
Nor his descendants begging bread.
He is ever merciful, and lends;
And his descendants are blessed. -Psalm 37.23-26 NKJV

I have been realizing how faithful God is to His children (John 1.11-13). It's not something I did not know, but it has become more real over the past month and a half. It has been ultra-stressful with the sale of the house and financial pressures and changes of plans. Honestly, I have struggled over that past month as previous posts may imply.

With all that having been said, God has proven Himself over and over. He has no need to prove anything to me, He is the Sovereign and All-Powerful King of all existence. He chooses to prove Himself anyway- out of His love for me. That is the love that sent His Son to die on the cross to pay a penalty for sin (Romans 3.23; Romans 6.23) that I was in no way able to pay on my own. Through my own fault I deserve death, as I have broken the Commands of God over and over again. Through His grace and mercy I am received as His child through Jesus' sacrifice and His love.

I see how wonderful He is. Sometimes He reminds me of my sister, Diane. Somehow He uses this to encourage me. I remember times we had fellowshipping and even working to share the Gospel. I remember her pushing me to improve things about myself. I am a better person because He placed Diane in my life.

Other times, He uses people like my pastor, LaVaugh McNary, to encourage me with the respect he shows me and how he listens to what I have to say. I am blessed to be a member of Antioch Fellowship Baptist Church.

The ways and sources God uses to lift my despair are many. I am enamored with Him. Some might want to call Him a "crutch" or to call me a "right-wing fundamentalist," but I do not care. I have been assured that if I love and follow Christ the world will hate me. That is fine. Just give me Jesus.
